The Program: A large portion of home gardens and landscapes in Marin County are well-established and/or mature; and most of these landscapes are probably not designed to deal effectively with wildfire. Homeowners need to develop defensible space and a Fire-smart landscape design that protects structures while retaining or improving biodiversity, and sustainability; supporting beneficial wildlife, efficient use of water, and development of a healthier natural environment. Established landscapes may require significant changes in established infrastructure, plant location and density, maintenance processes, and water usage to become a Fire-smart landscape. This presentation will use the "work-in- progress" Fire-smart landscape of an established native plant garden to suggest ways you might try to fire-harden your established home landscape.

This is an online event offered through the San Anselmo Library via Zoom.

The Speaker: Bob Mauceli has been a Marin Master Gardener in 2014. He lives on a north Novato hillside landscaped with 21 Tuscan olive trees, along with native trees, shrubs, ground covers and perennials. His study of the native California environment led him to learn more about the threats to it from invasive organisms of all kinds. Bob is a member of the California Native Plant Society, and is a birder.
